Historic Scituate Lighthouse
As I was driving to the office this morning I got to the Harbor and looked out at Historic Scituate Light and the lightkeeper’s cottage. It got me thinking to all the people who lived there.
The lighthouse was constructed in the early 1800s and the first lightkeeper was Simon Bates. He lived there with his wife and nine children. During the War of 1812 the British were attacking the coastal towns from the sea. One day two of Simon’s daughters, Rebecca and Abigail, were left alone at the light with their mother as a raiding party approached the harbor by boat. They realized there was no time to warn the people of Scituate so they picked up a fife and drum and began to play. The raiding party assumed there was a regiment in the harbor and turned away, saving the town.
The Scituate Historical Society is in charge, and this lighthouse is on the Register of Historic Places. And we have a brand new keeper. A local schoolteacher, his wife and daughter have become the new keepers of the light when the last keeper retired after 23 years. The lighthouse is open to the public several times a year.
Come discover the ahh factor of living in Scituate, where you can find anything from a small cottage by the sea to a spacious 3,000 sq. ft home. Our prices start in the $200,000’s to $2,000,000 plus.
